Trails & Hiking in Madison County

Here in Madison County, you’ll find more than 15 ponds and lakes, 30,000 acres of state forest land and hundreds of trail miles for hiking, biking, horseback riding and more.

Hike the gorge at Chittenango Falls State Park for a spectacular view of this 167-foot-tall waterfall.

For a level hike – and excellent bird watching – explore seven miles of trails at Great Swamp Conservancy, a spot named an Important Birding Area by the Audubon Society. Another trail nearby runs through the Old Erie Canal State Park. Stretching the entire width of Madison County, this trail presents opportunities for hiking, picnicking, running, horseback riding, bicycling, canoeing, fishing and snowmobiling.

Mountain bikers and horseback riders will enjoy the Charles E. Baker State Forest, with 130 miles of connected trails, horse stalls and tent and RV camping areas, it’s the perfect place to take a trail ride.

Looking for a great rails to trails adventure? The Oneida Rail Trail utilizes multiple rail beds that, when complete, will connect the heart of downtown Oneida to Wampsville and Sherrill.

And be sure to treat yourself to some hard-earned calories at one of our excellent restaurants before winding down for the night in a cozy B&B or hotel.
